Day-by-day itinerary

1. 1Day 1: Fes – Ifrane – Azrou – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Merzouga

   Your driver collects you from your accommodation in Fes at 8:30 for a relaxed drive south through Berber villages. Stop in Ifrane, “the Switzerland of Morocco”, and the Azrou cedar forest to look for monkeys, then have lunch in Midelt. In the afternoon, follow the Ziz Valley to Erfoud, known for its fossils and its date festival, with a stop at a viewpoint over the oasis. Dinner and overnight in a hotel in Merzouga.
2. 2Day 2: Full day in the desert – 4x4 tour, nomads and camel ride

   Begin with a 4×4 tour: see the irrigation channels and gardens of the Hassi Labied oasis, then drive south to the seasonal Srij lake (when there is water) and the village of Khamlia, known for its Gnawa music, a tradition with roots in sub-Saharan Africa. Visit a nomad family in their tent for mint tea and learn about life in the Sahara. After lunch, stop at panoramic viewpoints before returning to the village for your camel ride (1 to 1.5 hours), pausing on a dune to watch the sunset and try sandboarding. At camp, relax with tea before dinner, Berber drumming and a night under the stars.
3. 3Day 3: Merzouga – Rissani – Tinghir – Todra Gorge – Dades

   Catch the sunrise near camp, then have breakfast and a shower before returning by camel or 4×4 to meet your driver. On market days (Sunday, Tuesday or Thursday), visit Rissani’s weekly souk. Drive through Touroug, Tinejdad and Tinghir, with a stop above the palm-filled Todra Valley, then explore the Todra Gorge, a favourite with rock climbers. After lunch, continue to Boumalne Dades for dinner and the night in a hotel or riad.
4. 4Day 4: Dades – Kelaat M'Gouna – Skoura – Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou – Marrakech

   Follow the Valley of Roses through Kelaat M’Gouna and the Skoura palm grove to Ouarzazate, with optional visits to the film studios and Taourirt Kasbah. Explore Ait Ben Haddou, UNESCO-listed since 1987 and the setting for Gladiator, The Mummy and The Jewel of the Nile, and stop for lunch. Then cross the High Atlas over the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m), the highest major road pass in Morocco, and arrive in Marrakech in the afternoon or evening.
