Marrakech is the easiest place to begin a Morocco holiday. Menara airport has direct flights from across Europe and sits about 15 minutes from the medina, and the Sahara, the Atlas valleys and the Atlantic coast are all within a day’s drive.

Marrakech desert tours to the Sahara

A Marrakech desert tour is the trip most travellers remember longest. The road climbs to the Tizi n’Tichka pass (about 2,260 m), drops to the UNESCO-listed kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, then follows the Dades and Todra gorges to Merzouga. There you ride a camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes, which rise to around 150 m, and spend the night in a desert camp.

Merzouga is roughly 560 km from Marrakech, about 9–10 hours of driving in total, so the journey is split over several days with stops along the way.

Day trips from Marrakech

Not every excursion needs an overnight bag. With a private driver you can leave after breakfast and be back in the medina for dinner. Popular day trips from Marrakech include:

  • Ourika Valley – about an hour away, with Berber villages, riverside cafés and short walks to waterfalls.
  • Imlil and the Toubkal area – around 1.5 hours into the High Atlas, ideal for a guided walk with lunch in a village house.
  • Agafay Desert – a rocky desert landscape about 45 minutes from the city, good for sunset, camel rides or quad biking.
  • Ouzoud Waterfalls – roughly 2.5–3 hours north-east, Morocco's highest falls, often with Barbary macaques nearby.
  • Essaouira – a relaxed walled port on the Atlantic, around 2.5–3 hours west.
  • Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate – a long but rewarding day over the Tichka pass to see the famous kasbah.

Things to do in Marrakech

Leave at least two full days for the city itself, either before or after your tour.

  • Jemaa el-Fnaa – arrive late in the afternoon to see storytellers, musicians and the food stalls being set up for the evening.
  • The souks – lose yourself in the covered lanes north of the square, where leatherworkers, metalsmiths and spice sellers trade. Bargaining is expected and friendly.
  • Monuments – the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, the Ben Youssef Madrasa and the Koutoubia Mosque (viewed from outside by non-Muslims).
  • Gardens – the Majorelle Garden beside the YSL Museum, or Le Jardin Secret for a calm hour inside the medina.
  • Hammam and cooking – try a traditional steam bath and scrub, or a cooking class that starts with a market visit and ends with your own tagine.

Best time for tours from Marrakech

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) bring warm days and cool evenings, both in the city and in the desert. Summer in Marrakech often passes 40°C and the Sahara is hotter still, so sightseeing is best done early. From November to March days are sunny and mild, but desert nights are cold and the Tichka pass can see snow, so pack warm layers.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need for a desert tour from Marrakech?

Three days is the minimum to reach the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga and spend a night in a desert camp. Four or five days lets you travel more slowly and see the gorges and valleys properly.

Can you visit the Sahara on a day trip from Marrakech?

Not the big dunes: Merzouga is about 9–10 hours' drive each way. For a taste of the desert in a day, the Agafay stone desert is around 45 minutes from Marrakech.

How much do Marrakech tours cost?
