Morocco off-road tours take you where the tarmac gives up: into the dunes of Erg Chebbi, across the stony plateau of Agafay and along the long desert pistes that lead to Erg Chegaga. On some days you sit back in a 4×4 while a driver who grew up on these tracks reads the sand for you. On others, you hold the handlebars yourself.
Our Marrakech team has been organising desert journeys for more than a decade, and engines now play a big part in many of them. Below you will find the vehicles we use, the terrain they cover, the experience each one demands and a few simple rules for riding without leaving damage behind.

Sahara 4×4 expeditions
The four-wheel drive is the workhorse of the Moroccan south, usually a Toyota Land Cruiser or something similar, and it is the only sensible way to reach the wilder corners of the desert. Our driver handles everything; you need no experience at all, just a tolerance for a bumpy ride and plenty of camera battery.
The classic expedition heads for Erg Chegaga. From Marrakech it is about 450 km and 8 to 9 hours to M’Hamid, crossing the High Atlas by the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 m, then dropping through Ouarzazate, the palm groves of the Draa Valley and Zagora. At M’Hamid the road ends. The last 60 km or so west to the dunes is pure piste – roughly two hours of sand, gravel and dry riverbeds. Chegaga’s dunes reach about 60 m, lower than Erg Chebbi’s 150 m giants near Merzouga, but the area is much quieter and feels properly remote. Most trips leave the following morning across the flat, cracked bed of dry Lake Iriki to Foum Zguid, which is a thrilling drive in its own right. Our 3-day Erg Chegaga tour follows exactly this loop, and the wider Erg Chegaga desert tours page covers longer versions.

Quads, buggies and KTM enduro bikes
If you would rather drive than be driven, these three machines cover every level from complete beginner to seasoned rider.
Quads (ATVs)
Quads are where most people start. They are automatic, easy to steer at low speed and forgiving on flat ground. Around Merzouga, our Merzouga quad excursions run along the edge of Erg Chebbi, past black volcanic rock fields and onto the lower dunes, while the Agafay rides near Marrakech stay on firm, rocky tracks with mountain views.
Dune buggies
A buggy (often called an SSV or side-by-side) has a roll cage, seatbelts and room for a passenger, so it feels more secure than a quad when the ground tilts. On sand it climbs surprisingly well. The Merzouga dune buggy is our favourite for couples and friends who want a proper dose of dune driving without the balance a quad needs.
KTM enduro motorbikes
This is the serious option. Soft sand is one of the hardest surfaces you can ride, and a heavy enduro bike punishes hesitation. Our KTM tour in Merzouga is for riders who are already confident off-road; a guide on his own bike leads the way, picks lines through the dunes and adjusts the route to the group.

Rugged pistes worth the effort
Part of the pleasure of off-road travel in Morocco is the routes between the famous places. A few we return to again and again:
- M’Hamid to Erg Chegaga – a mix of hard gravel, soft sand and small dunes, with nomad camps and acacias along the way.
- Erg Chegaga to Foum Zguid – the long, dead-flat run across dry Lake Iriki, where mirages shimmer on hot days.
- The tracks around Erg Chebbi – linking Merzouga with small villages such as Khamlia, known for its Gnawa music, and with the black-stone hamada beyond the dunes.
- The Agafay plateau – short, rocky trails with the High Atlas as a backdrop, ideal for a first ride.
Thinking of tackling pistes in a hire car? Most rental contracts exclude off-road driving, and sand catches out even good drivers. Read our notes on driving in Morocco first, or let one of our drivers take the wheel. For general travel advice and regional information, the national tourist board’s Visit Morocco site is a useful starting point.

Safety and experience levels
Every self-drive activity starts with a safety briefing and a short practice on easy ground, and the guide sets the pace for the least confident person in the group. Helmets are provided, and we recommend goggles or sunglasses plus a scarf against dust. We do not ride after dark, and in summer we ride early or late to avoid the worst of the heat.
Pick the right level
- Beginner: 4×4 passenger, quad rides on firm ground at Agafay or on the flats around Merzouga.
- Intermediate: dune buggy driving and longer quad loops into the lower dunes of Erg Chebbi.
- Advanced: KTM enduro riding in soft sand – only if you already ride off-road regularly.
- Children ride as passengers; tell us their ages and we will advise what is possible.
- Check that your travel insurance covers motorised activities before you go.
Riding responsibly in the desert
The desert looks empty, but it is home to nomad families, herders and fragile plant life, and engines are loud. We ask everyone to follow a few simple habits:
- Stay on the tracks your guide chooses and avoid riding over the scrub and acacias that hold the sand together.
- Keep well away from nomad tents, wells and grazing animals, and slow to walking pace in villages and near camel caravans.
- Never chase wildlife or ride close to camps where other travellers are resting.
- Carry out everything you bring in – bottles, wrappers, the lot.
- Ask before photographing people, and accept a polite no.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a licence to ride a quad or buggy in Morocco?
For our guided quad and buggy rides no special licence is needed; you receive a briefing and practise before setting off. For the KTM tour we will ask about your riding experience when you book.
Which off-road activity is best for a complete beginner?
A quad on firm ground, or a 4×4 trip where our driver does the work. Quads in Agafay are the gentlest start; buggies are a good next step.
Can we combine off-road riding with a camel trek and a desert camp?
Yes. In Merzouga many guests ride a quad or buggy in the afternoon and then switch to camels for the walk to camp. We can build this into a multi-day tour.
How long does the drive to Erg Chegaga take?
About 8 to 9 hours from Marrakech to M’Hamid, then roughly two hours of piste in a 4×4 to reach the dunes. Most people break the journey with sightseeing on the way.
What should I wear for off-road activities?
Closed shoes, long trousers, sunglasses or goggles and a scarf for dust. Bring a warm jacket for evenings, especially from November to March.
Can you design a longer off-road trip?
Yes. We regularly plan multi-day 4×4 routes across the south, with or without self-drive sessions. Tell us your dates and level and we will send a free quote.
