Morocco is bigger than many travellers expect, so it helps to know the distances before you choose. These are the routes our guests book most often:

  • 3-day desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga – over the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass, past the kasbah of Ait Benhaddou and through the Dades Valley to the dunes. Marrakech to Merzouga is around 560 km, roughly 9–10 hours of driving split over two days.
  • 3-day Marrakech to Fes tour via the Sahara – the same mountain crossing and desert night, then north through the Ziz Valley and the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas to Fes, so you never retrace your steps.
  • 3-day tour from Fes to Merzouga – via Ifrane and Midelt to the edge of the Sahara. Fes to Merzouga is about 470 km, around 7–8 hours on the road.
  • Longer circuits of 8 to 18 days – combine the imperial cities, Chefchaouen, the Atlas Mountains, the desert and the Atlantic coast, starting from Casablanca, Tangier or Marrakech.

When to travel

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most comfortable seasons, with warm days across the country and mild nights in the desert. Summer is very hot in the Sahara and the southern valleys, so we plan early starts and long lunch breaks, while the coast and the Atlas stay pleasant. Winter brings clear skies and quiet roads, but desert nights are cold from November to March and snow can close the high mountain passes for a few hours, so pack warm layers.

How many days do you need for a private tour of Morocco?

Three days is the minimum for a trip from Marrakech or Fes to the Sahara and back. With 7 to 10 days you can combine the desert with the imperial cities, and two weeks or more lets you add Chefchaouen, the Atlantic coast and a slower pace.

How much does a private tour in Morocco cost?

Is it safe to travel around Morocco with a private driver?
