Day-by-day itinerary

1. 1Day 1: Casablanca – Rabat – Meknes – Fes

   Pick-up from your hotel in Casablanca at 8:30. First stop is Rabat, Morocco’s capital, to see the Kasbah of the Udayas and the Hassan Tower. Continue to Meknes to visit El Hedim Square and the monumental Bab Mansour gate. After lunch, drive on to Fes, arriving in the late afternoon. Overnight in a hotel or riad.
2. 2Day 2: Guided tour of Fes

   Discover Fes, one of Morocco’s four imperial cities, with a local guide. Start at the gates of the Royal Palace and the Mellah, the former Jewish quarter, then visit a zellige tile workshop and enjoy a panoramic view over the city. In the maze of the UNESCO-listed medina you will see the Chouara tanneries, Al Quaraouiyine mosque and university, considered the oldest in the world, the Al Attarine Madrasa and the Nejjarine fountain. Overnight in Fes.
3. 3Day 3: Fes – Ifrane – Azrou – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Merzouga

   Leave Fes for the Middle Atlas, passing Berber villages along the way. Stop in Ifrane, “the Switzerland of Morocco”, and in the Azrou cedar forest, where you may spot Barbary macaques. Lunch in Midelt. In the afternoon, follow the spectacular Ziz Valley to Erfoud, known for its fossils and date festival, with a stop at a viewpoint over the palm groves. Dinner and overnight in a hotel in Merzouga.
4. 4Day 4: Full day in the desert – 4x4 tour and camel ride

   After breakfast, explore the Merzouga area by 4×4. Visit the Hassi Labied oasis and its traditional irrigation channels, then drive to the seasonal lake of Srij (when there is water). In the village of Khamlia, listen to Gnawa music, a spiritual tradition brought to Morocco by people from sub-Saharan Africa. Continue to the old mines of Mifis and visit a nomad family for mint tea and a glimpse of life in the desert. After lunch, ride a camel into the dunes (1 to 1.5 hours), stopping on a high dune to watch the sunset and try sandboarding. At camp, relax with mint tea, enjoy dinner and Berber drumming, and sleep under a sky full of stars.
5. 5Day 5: Merzouga – Rissani – Tinghir – Todra Gorge – Dades Valley

   Wake early for sunrise over the dunes, then return to Merzouga by camel or 4×4 for breakfast and a shower. On market days (Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday) visit Rissani’s traditional souk. Drive west through Touroug, Tinejdad and Tinghir, with a stop above the palm-filled Todra Valley, then walk into the Todra Gorge, a popular rock-climbing spot at the foot of the High Atlas. After lunch, continue to Boumalne Dades. Dinner and overnight in a hotel or riad.
6. 6Day 6: Dades – Skoura – Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou – Tizi n'Tichka – Marrakech

   On the final day, follow the Valley of Roses through Kelaat M’Gouna and the Skoura palm grove to Ouarzazate, with optional stops at the film studios and Taourirt Kasbah. Visit Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the setting for films such as Gladiator, The Mummy and The Jewel of the Nile. Then cross the High Atlas over the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m), the highest major road pass in Morocco, enjoying views of valleys and Berber villages. Arrive at your hotel in Marrakech in the late afternoon or evening.
