This 6-day private tour from Marrakech gives you time to enjoy the desert at an unhurried pace. Cross the High Atlas to Ait Ben Haddou and the Dades Gorge, then continue via the Todra Gorge to the Erg Chebbi dunes, where you ride a camel at sunset and sleep in a desert camp.

A full day in the Merzouga area lets you meet nomad families, hear Gnawa music in Khamlia and explore by 4x4 or camel. The return journey crosses the Middle Atlas to Fes for a guided tour of its medina, then heads to Casablanca to see the Hassan II Mosque before returning to Marrakech.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. 1Day 1: Marrakech – Tizi n'Tichka – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Gorge
Leave Marrakech and climb the High Atlas over the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m) to Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 that has appeared in Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Continue to Ouarzazate, “the gateway to the desert”, to see the Atlas Film Studios and Taourirt Kasbah, then follow the Valley of Roses to the Dades Gorge. Dinner and overnight in a riad or hotel.
  2. 2Day 2: Dades – Todra Gorge – Erfoud – Merzouga camel ride
Walk through the Todra Gorge, a narrow canyon popular with climbers and hikers. Drive via Tinejdad to Erfoud, famous for its fossils, and visit a workshop where fossil stone is carved into furniture and crafts. At the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, swap the car for a camel and ride to one of the best sunset viewpoints, where you can try sandboarding as the sand changes colour. Spend the night in Berber-style tents at a desert camp, with dinner under the stars and drumming around the campfire.
  3. 3Day 3: Full day in the Merzouga area – nomads, Khamlia and the dunes
Spend the day exploring the desert your way, by camel or in the comfort of a 4×4. Visit Khamlia village, known for its Gnawa music, and the old lead mines of Mifis, worked long before the French protectorate. Enjoy tea with a nomad family living beyond the dunes, then spend the night in a riad or hotel in Merzouga.
  4. 4Day 4: Merzouga – Rissani – Ziz Valley – Midelt – Azrou – Ifrane – Fes
After breakfast, pass through Rissani and its traditional souk, then follow the palm groves of the Ziz Valley north to Midelt for lunch. Continue to the cedar forest near Azrou to see the Barbary macaques, and through Ifrane, the clean, alpine-style “Switzerland of Morocco”, close to the Mischliffen ski area. Overnight in Fes.
  5. 5Day 5: Guided tour of Fes – Casablanca
Explore Fes el-Bali, the UNESCO-listed medieval medina, with a local guide. Fes is made up of three parts: the old medina, Fes el-Jdid with its Royal Palace and Mellah (Jewish quarter), and the Ville Nouvelle built during the French protectorate. Visit the tanneries, the Al Attarine Madrasa, the Zaouia of Moulay Idriss and local artisan cooperatives, and enjoy a panoramic view over the medina. After lunch, drive to Casablanca, Morocco’s largest city and economic capital. Dinner and overnight in Casablanca.
  6. 6Day 6: Casablanca – Marrakech
Visit the Hassan II Mosque and Casablanca’s main landmarks, then drive back to Marrakech, where the tour ends at your accommodation or the airport.

We took a 6-day excursion from Marrakech through the Sahara, Casablanca, and returned. Aziz, our driver, was a highly skilled and safe driver (very important on Moroccan roads!). It was a fantastic trip, with special mention going to the beautiful tent camp and the best Moroccan meal I've ever had at Hotel Ksar Sultan!

We recently returned from a fantastic four-day vacation with this agency: excellent upfront communication, prompt and dependable service, and fair prices. It comes highly recommended. Brahim, our driver, is a really compassionate person who goes above and beyond for his guests, adapts quickly to what you want, speaks good English, and drives confidently and safely. We would love to travel with him again!

We just finished a six-day excursion with our fantastic guide, Mohammed. He was extremely informed and skilled at personalizing the trip to our specific needs. Mohammed was very knowledgeable about all the locations and even made some extra stops that we were interested in, such as a Berber argan oil collective and a Berber rug collective, where we met the women and saw how they worked their amazing carpets.
