Day-by-day itinerary
1Day 1: Agadir – Taliouine – Taznakht – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate
Head south-east from Agadir to Taliouine, where a saffron cooperative shows you how to tell genuine saffron from fakes over a cup of saffron tea. Continue to Taznakht, a major centre for Berber carpet weaving. Arrive at Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified village of earthen buildings, UNESCO-listed since 1987 and used in films such as Gladiator and Prince of Persia. Have lunch in the old kasbah, then drive to Ouarzazate, “the Hollywood of Africa”, to tour the Atlas Film Studios. Dinner and overnight in a hotel or riad.2Day 2: Ouarzazate – Tinghir – Todra Gorge – Erfoud – Rissani – Merzouga
Drive east through Tinghir to the Todra Gorge, where cliffs up to 300 m high close in to just 20 m apart. Take a walk between the walls before lunch in Tinejdad or Touroug. Stop to see the khettaras, ancient underground irrigation channels similar to the qanats of Iran, then continue to Erfoud, known for its fossils, and Rissani, near the ruins of Sijilmassa, once a great caravan city on the trans-Saharan trade routes. Dinner and overnight in a riad or guesthouse in Merzouga.3Day 3: Merzouga – nomads – Mifis – Khamlia – Erg Chebbi camel ride
Drive off-road to meet a nomad family living near the dunes and hear, over mint tea, how they live in the Sahara. Continue to the old Mifis mines on a plateau with wide views over Erg Chebbi, then to Khamlia, a village whose people trace their roots to West and Central Africa via the caravan routes. Enjoy Gnawa music and Berber “pizza” for lunch. In the late afternoon, ride a camel across the Erg Chebbi dunes to watch the sunset and arrive at your camp. Dinner and Berber music around the fire under the stars.4Day 4: Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Errachidia – Midelt – Azrou – Ifrane – Fes
Get up early for an unforgettable sunrise, then return to Merzouga by camel or 4×4. Drive north through the Ziz Valley, stopping for photos of its palm groves, then via Errachidia and the Tizi n’Talghemt pass to Midelt, the apple capital. Cross the Middle Atlas and its cedar forests, home to Barbary macaques, and pass through Ifrane, built by the French in the 1930s to resemble an alpine resort. Overnight in a hotel or riad in Fes.5Day 5: Guided tour of Fes
Explore Fes, Morocco’s oldest imperial city, with a local guide. See the golden gates of the Royal Palace and the Mellah, then the Borj Sud, a 16th-century Saadian fortress with views over the medina. Enter the medina at Bab Boujloud and visit Al Quaraouiyine, the world’s oldest university, the Chouara tanneries, where leather is still dyed by hand as in medieval times, and the Al Attarine Madrasa, built in 1325. After lunch in a traditional restaurant, visit the Zaouia of Moulay Idriss II. Overnight in Fes.6Day 6: Fes – Meknes – Volubilis – Rif Mountains – Chefchaouen
Visit Meknes, Morocco’s capital in the 17th century: the monumental Bab Mansour gate, El Hedim Square and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. Continue to Volubilis to see the remarkably well-preserved Roman mosaics with a local guide. After lunch, cross the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen, with its blue medina, craft shops and rooftop cafés. Overnight in a riad or hotel.7Day 7: Chefchaouen – Rabat – Casablanca
Drive to Rabat, Morocco’s capital and home of the royal family. Visit the Hassan Tower, the unfinished minaret of a 12th-century mosque begun by the Almohad sultan Yacoub El Mansour, and the nearby Mausoleum of Mohammed V. Then explore the Kasbah of the Udayas, settled by Andalusian refugees, overlooking the ocean. After lunch, continue for about an hour to Casablanca, Morocco’s economic capital. Overnight in a hotel.8Day 8: Casablanca – airport
Depending on your flight time, visit the Hassan II Mosque, with one of the tallest minarets in the world, before your transfer to Casablanca Mohammed V Airport.

We booked the 8-day tour from Agadir with our guide Hisham, and it was the best decision we made for our vacation to Morocco! He is a really polite and informed person who made our trip more flexible because it was a private tour and he arranged several stops depending on our wishes. Thank you very much. If you want to get the most out of your Moroccan vacation, we strongly recommend this one!
AnnaYou get to see so much of the Atlas Mountains and visit so many interesting towns. Adil is a good driver who is familiar with these roads. The desert camp was breathtaking, and my first camel ride was unforgettable. 10/10, would recommend.
EmilyThis company was fantastic, and we learned a lot. Our driver, Adil, was quite helpful. He met us in Agadir, drove us to the camel camp, and then returned us to Marrakesh. He secured our things and showed us all the tourist sights along the way. I strongly suggest it! Also, the lady who assisted me in making bookings was excellent. We just spoke via email, and she was very helpful in setting everything up and dealing with our changes during the trip. This is the only company I would work with again! 100/10!! An amazing, experienced team that made things so simple for us.
