Day-by-day itinerary

  1. 1Day 1: Arrival in Tangier
Meet and greet at Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport or Tanger Med port, and transfer to your riad. Dinner and overnight in Tangier.
  2. 2Day 2: Tangier sightseeing – Asilah
Your private tour starts at 9:00. Visit Cap Spartel, the north-western tip of Africa, where a lighthouse overlooks the meeting point of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, and the nearby Caves of Hercules, inhabited since Neolithic times. In the afternoon, drive down the coast to Asilah, a whitewashed seaside town famous for its murals. Dinner and overnight in a riad in Asilah.
  3. 3Day 3: Asilah – Tetouan – Rif Mountains – Chefchaouen
Drive via Tetouan, whose UNESCO-listed medina reflects its Andalusian heritage, and through the green Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen. Founded in 1471, the town is known worldwide for its blue-washed houses and alleys. Dinner and overnight in a riad.
  4. 4Day 4: A day in Chefchaouen
Spend a relaxed day in Chefchaouen, the perfect break from the busier imperial cities. Explore the medina and the kasbah, walk to the Ras El Ma spring, hike up to the Spanish Mosque for sunset, and shop for local crafts and goat’s cheese. Dinner and overnight in Chefchaouen.
  5. 5Day 5: Chefchaouen – Volubilis – Meknes – Fes
Visit Volubilis, the best-preserved Roman site in Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once the capital of the kingdom of Mauretania, it flourished under Roman rule in the 1st–3rd centuries AD thanks to olive oil, and its townhouses still have superb mosaic floors. Continue to Meknes, the imperial capital of Sultan Moulay Ismail (1672–1727), who surrounded it with high walls and monumental gates such as Bab Mansour. Arrive in Fes in the late afternoon. Dinner and overnight in a riad.
  6. 6Day 6: Guided tour of Fes
Spend a full day exploring Fes el-Bali, the UNESCO-listed medieval medina, with a private English-speaking guide. Wander through a maze of thousands of alleys, past mosques, Koranic schools and fountains. Highlights include Bab Boujloud, the Chouara tanneries, the craft souks, the Zaouia of Moulay Idriss II, Al Quaraouiyine mosque and university, the Al Attarine Madrasa, the Nejjarine fountain, the Royal Palace gates and the Mellah. Dinner and overnight in a riad.
  7. 7Day 7: Fes – Ifrane – Azrou – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Erfoud
Climb into the Middle Atlas, homeland of many Berber tribes, and stop in the Azrou cedar forest to see Barbary macaques. Lunch in Midelt, Morocco’s apple capital. Cross the Tizi n’Talghemt pass and follow the spectacular Ziz Gorges and valley past the Meski spring to Erfoud, known for its fossils. Dinner and overnight in a kasbah-style hotel on the edge of the desert.
  8. 8Day 8: Erfoud – Rissani – Merzouga camel ride
Enjoy a relaxed morning, then continue through the Tafilalet oasis to Rissani, once the caravan town of Sijilmassa, the wealthy gateway of the trans-Saharan gold trade. Visit fossil workshops, the ruins of Sijilmassa and the shrine of Moulay Ali Cherif. In the late afternoon, reach Merzouga at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes. Ride a camel to your camp for sunset, dinner and a sky full of stars. Hotel and eco-lodge options are also available. Dinner and overnight in a desert camp.
  9. 9Day 9: Merzouga – Todra Gorge – Dades Gorge
Watch the sunrise, then ride back by camel for breakfast. Drive west along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, between the High Atlas to the north and Jebel Saghro to the south. Walk through the towering Todra Gorge and in the shade of the palm and olive groves along the river, then continue into the Dades Gorge. Dinner and overnight in a guesthouse or kasbah.
  10. 10Day 10: Dades – Valley of Roses – Skoura – Ouarzazate
Drive through the Valley of Roses around Kelaat M’Gouna, where most of Morocco’s rose water is produced, and take a short off-road detour to meet semi-nomadic Ait Atta families. Visit Amridil Kasbah in Skoura and its small museum, then Taourirt Kasbah in Ouarzazate, the former residence of the Glaoui family. Dinner and overnight in Ouarzazate.
  11. 11Day 11: Ouarzazate – Taznakht – Taliouine – Taroudant
Visit the Atlas Film Studios in the morning, then cross the dry Anti-Atlas to Taznakht for lunch and a visit to a carpet cooperative. Continue through Taliouine, famous for its saffron, to the walled town of Taroudant in the fertile Souss Valley, once a capital of the Saadian dynasty. Dinner and overnight in a riad.
  12. 12Day 12: A day in Taroudant
Take a guided walk through Taroudant’s medina and its two souks, where many crafts are still made for local farmers rather than tourists. Often called “little Marrakech”, the town lets you enjoy everyday Moroccan life without the crowds. The afternoon is free. Dinner and overnight in a riad.
  13. 13Day 13: Taroudant – Agadir – Essaouira
Drive to the coast at Agadir, Morocco’s main beach resort, then north along the Atlantic past surf beaches, fishing villages and banana plantations. Stop at a women’s cooperative producing argan oil, the “gold of the Berbers”, from the protected argan forests. Arrive in Essaouira. Dinner and overnight in a riad in the medina or a hotel by the beach.
  14. 14Day 14: A day in Essaouira
Enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of Essaouira’s UNESCO-listed medina: visit art galleries, eat fresh seafood by the harbour and walk along the beach. Active travellers can try kitesurfing, horse or camel riding, quad biking or a cooking class (book in advance). Dinner and overnight in Essaouira.
  15. 15Day 15: Essaouira – Marrakech
Drive about three hours to Marrakech, the “Red City” and the last of Morocco’s four imperial cities on this tour. After checking in to your riad, head to Jemaa el-Fnaa square and watch the musicians, storytellers and food stalls come to life from a rooftop café. Dinner and overnight in a riad.
  16. 16Day 16: Guided tour of Marrakech
Spend the morning with a local guide exploring the souks and their craftspeople, the Ben Youssef Madrasa, the Bahia Palace and the Koutoubia Mosque, ending at Jemaa el-Fnaa. In the afternoon, take a horse-drawn carriage to the Majorelle Garden, once owned by Yves Saint Laurent. In the evening, try grilled meats, harira soup and spiced tea at the night food stalls. Dinner and overnight in a riad.
  17. 17Day 17: Day trip to Ait Ben Haddou
Leave at 8:30 to cross the High Atlas, with views of mountain villages and valleys along the way. Explore Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO-listed fortified village that has appeared in Lawrence of Arabia, The Mummy, Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven. Return to Marrakech at about 18:00.
  18. 18Day 18: Marrakech – airport
After breakfast, private transfer to Marrakech airport (30 minutes) or Casablanca airport (about 3 hours).

Traveller reviews

We recently completed a private 8-day tour from Tangier. We would strongly recommend this tour to anyone interested in experiencing this beautiful country from the inside. We discovered many unexpected places and people thanks to the guide. We were able to taste and feel Moroccan culture from the inside out thanks to the activities (as recommended by the guide). The scheduled activities were fantastic (the desert tour was a particular highlight for us!), but there is also enough time and space for your own activities. The guide also provides numerous suggestions and opportunities for you to visit various locations or participate in various activities. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

What an amazing way to see and experience Morocco! This trip takes you to many different parts of the country besides Marrakech. Hassan was a gracious host who accommodated many of the group's requests. Don't hesitate...book it today. The food at the camp was quite good, and the luxury camp was well worth the money. Excellent value and a great experience.

Everything was well-organized, from pickup to local guides, and we couldn't have asked for more. This 18-day tour is ideal for discovering all of Morocco's best attractions. Our driver, Ahmed, was fantastic, and one always felt safe in his hands; he was gracious and attentive to any questions, and he was always willing to lend a helping hand! My one tip: make sure you have a day or two before or after to settle in or decompress before returning home.
