Our merzouga ktm tour puts you on a proper enduro machine at the foot of Erg Chebbi, with a local guide riding just ahead to read the sand for you. This is the loud, physical way to see the Sahara: soft dune ridges in the morning light, then flat-out stretches across the black stone hamada where the horizon seems to run all the way to Algeria.
Tour overview
We work with a small, well-kept fleet of KTM bikes in the 250–450 cc range, prepared by mechanics in Merzouga who look after them every day. Before you start, your guide checks your riding level, sets up the bike for your height and runs through how sand behaves: weight back, throttle steady, never brake hard on a descent. Then you ride together, one guide per small group, choosing terrain that matches what you can handle rather than what looks good on camera.
The route mixes three very different surfaces. The dunes of Erg Chebbi, which reach around 150 m at their highest, give you soft sand and rolling crests. The hamada, the dark gravel plain that surrounds the erg, is fast and open. And the old mining roads near Khamlia and Taouz, built for lead and barite trucks decades ago, add rocky, technical sections. Shorter rides stay mostly on the dune fringe; the half-day enduro covers all three. If you prefer four wheels, compare with our quad biking excursions in Merzouga or the Merzouga dune buggy ride.
Highlights
- Riding a well-maintained KTM enduro bike on the soft sand of Erg Chebbi
- Fast, open runs across the black hamada with nothing but stone and sky around you
- A stop at Khamlia, the village of the Gnawa musicians, on the half-day route
- Rocky sections on the old mining roads for riders who want a technical challenge
- A guide on his own bike who knows every bowl and soft patch in the dunes
Itinerary
Meeting and briefing (20–30 minutes)
We meet at the bike base in Hassi Labied or Merzouga village, a few minutes from most hotels and camps on the western edge of the dunes. You sign a short rider form, choose your helmet and goggles, and go through the briefing. Your guide will ask you to ride a small loop on firm ground so he can see how you handle the bike before you touch sand.
Dune fringe (1-hour and 2-hour rides)
On the one-hour ride you stay on the lower, more forgiving dunes and the flat sandy corridors between them, with photo stops on a crest overlooking the erg. The two-hour ride adds bigger dunes, longer climbs and a loop out onto the hamada so you can feel the difference between sand and stone at speed. Early morning (from about 7:30 in summer) and late afternoon give the best light and the coolest air.
Half-day enduro tour (about 4 hours)
After warming up in the dunes, you head south across the hamada towards Khamlia, where you can stop for mint tea and, if the musicians are around, a few minutes of Gnawa drumming. From there the route follows old mining roads and dry riverbeds through the black desert. You loop back to the dunes for a final ride on the sand before returning to base around midday or sunset, depending on your start time.
Options and prices
There are three ways to ride. The 1-hour KTM ride is a taste of dune riding, ideal if you are already in Merzouga for a camel trek and want a quick dose of adrenaline. The 2-hour KTM ride gives you time to settle in and tackle bigger dunes plus a stretch of hamada. The half-day enduro tour is the full experience for keen riders, with Khamlia and the mining tracks included. Prices are per motorbike. The live price for your group, date and option is shown in the booking form below, and you secure the booking with a 10% deposit.

Good to know
Before you ride
- Minimum age is 18. Riders should have real off-road or motorbike experience; this is not a learn-to-ride session.
- We strongly advise holding a motorbike licence and checking that your travel insurance covers off-road motorbike use.
- Wear long trousers, sturdy closed shoes or boots and a long-sleeved top. Bring your own gloves if you have them.
- Sand riding is tiring. Expect to fall softly at least once, and tell your guide if your arms start to fade.
The best months are October to April. In summer we ride only at dawn and late afternoon, as midday sand temperatures are punishing for riders and engines alike. Our guides will cut a ride short if wind lifts the sand too much to see safely. For broader travel reassurance, read our guide on whether Morocco is safe to visit.

Frequently asked questions
I have never ridden on sand. Can I still book?
Yes, if you are comfortable on a motorbike on dirt or gravel. Your guide will start you on easy terrain and teach the basics of sand technique. Complete beginners with no motorbike experience are better off with a quad or buggy.
Can a passenger ride pillion?
No. Enduro bikes in deep sand are not suitable for two people, so every rider needs their own bike.
What size are the bikes?
Mostly 250 cc to 450 cc KTM enduro models. Tell us your height and experience when booking and we will match the bike to you.
Can I combine the ride with a night in the desert?
Easily. Many guests ride in the morning and then take a camel to a desert camp in the afternoon. We can arrange the timing as part of any Sahara trip.
