An Agafay buggy ride puts you behind a steering wheel rather than handlebars, strapped into a two-seat off-road machine with a roll cage, a seat belt and somebody you like sitting next to you. That is the whole appeal. Couples, friends and parents with teenagers share the same machine, take turns at the wheel if they wish, and talk (or shout) to each other the entire way. We pick you up in Marrakech, drive under an hour to the plateau, and hand you the keys after a careful briefing.

Know what landscape you are driving into: the Agafay is a rocky desert of bare, rounded hills, gravel plains and dry gullies, with the High Atlas lined up to the south. There are no towering dunes here. That firm, uneven ground is exactly what makes a buggy fun. If you are torn between this and the Sahara proper, our page on Merzouga vs Agafay desert explains the trade-offs honestly.

Tour overview

Buggies feel more stable and car-like than quads: four wheels planted wide, a bucket seat, pedals for accelerator and brake, and a cage over your head. Each buggy carries one or two people, and the price is per buggy, so a pair travelling together pays the same as a solo driver. A local guide leads the convoy, picks the line through rough sections and stops at the best viewpoints. Afterwards there is time for a drink in a desert camp before your driver takes you back to the city.

If you would rather ride solo, our Agafay quad biking trip gives every person their own machine. For a broader look at what the area offers, see all our Agafay desert tours, and if driving off-road is becoming a habit, browse our off-road tours across Morocco.

Highlights

  • Two-seat buggies with roll cage and seat belts, shared with your travel partner
  • Swap drivers halfway if you both want a turn
  • Rough tracks, gullies and ridges that reward a steady hand on the wheel
  • Panoramas across the plateau to the High Atlas peaks
  • Guide-led convoy with regular photo and water stops
  • Return transport from your Marrakech hotel or riad

Itinerary

Meet your driver in Marrakech

We collect you from your accommodation, or from the closest point a vehicle can reach if you are staying inside the medina. Typical departures are around 9:00 for a morning drive and 14:00 for an afternoon one, while sunset slots move with the seasons. Allow 45 to 60 minutes on the road heading south-west out of the city.

Briefing and test drive (about 20 minutes)

At the buggy base you choose who drives first, get fitted with helmets and buckle in. The guide explains the pedals, how to take a slope straight on rather than at an angle, braking distances on gravel and the signals used in the convoy. A slow lap of the practice area lets you get used to the steering before heading out.

Out on the plateau (1 or 2 hours)

The convoy follows a loop of dirt tracks and open ground. On the shorter option you reach a couple of high points over the valley and are back at base within the hour. The longer loop adds rougher sections through dry riverbeds, more climbing and a longer pause on a ridge where the whole Atlas range opens up. Halfway is a natural moment to switch drivers.

Refreshment stop (about 30 minutes)

At the end of the drive you shake off the dust and sit down for mint tea in a Berber-style camp before heading back.

Back to Marrakech

Another 45 to 60 minutes in the vehicle. Expect around four hours in total for the one-hour drive, and five or so for the longer and sunset options.

Options and prices

All three options are priced per buggy, which seats one or two people. The 1-hour buggy ride suits a first try or a tight schedule. The 2-hour buggy ride is the better choice if you plan to share the driving, since each person gets a decent stint behind the wheel. The sunset buggy ride (2 hours) covers similar ground but ends in the golden light of late afternoon, when the heat has gone out of the day. Groups simply book several buggies.

Good to know

  • Who can drive: drivers must be adults who can drive a car; bring your driving licence or a photo of it in case the operator asks. Children can sit as passengers if they are tall enough for the seat belt, so let us know ages in advance.
  • What to wear: trainers or boots, trousers, sunglasses and a scarf or buff for the dust. A fleece is worth carrying for sunset rides from November to March.
  • Fitness: no special fitness needed, though the ride is bumpy. It is not advised during pregnancy or with serious back problems.
  • Safety: keep both hands on the wheel, follow the guide’s line and leave space to the buggy in front.
  • Best season: autumn and spring are perfect. In July and August, book an early start or sunset. Our article on safety in Morocco covers general travel questions.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the price per buggy rather than per person?

Because each buggy holds one or two people, you pay for the machine. Two friends sharing pay the same as one person driving alone.

Can my partner and I both drive?

Yes. Swap seats at one of the regroup stops; the guide will tell you when it is convenient.

Is a buggy safer than a quad?

It feels more secure to most people thanks to the roll cage, seat belts and four wide wheels, but both are safe when you follow the guide and drive within your comfort zone.

Will we drive on sand dunes?

Not in Agafay, which is a stony landscape. For dunes, consider a dune buggy in Merzouga on a multi-day desert trip.

Can we book a private convoy for our group?

Usually, yes. Send us a message with your numbers and preferred date and we will check availability.
