Agafay quad biking is the fastest way to trade the medina’s scooters and market calls for open ground, big skies and the snow line of the High Atlas. We collect you from your riad or hotel in Marrakech, drive roughly 40 km south-west, and within the hour you are rolling across rocky plateaus and dry riverbeds on a quad of your own. It is a short, punchy half-day built around the ride itself.
One thing to set straight before you book: the Agafay is a stone desert. Picture rolling hills of pale earth and gravel, not tall golden dunes. If sand is what you have in mind, read our honest comparison of Merzouga and the Agafay desert first. For speed without a nine-hour drive, this is it.
Tour overview
This is a guided ride that suits complete beginners as well as people who have ridden before. The quads are automatic, and your guide rides in front at a pace that suits the least confident rider. Each person normally gets their own machine; two people can share one if one of you would rather sit on the back. The tracks are mostly firm and stony, with loose patches and short ridges that keep things lively without becoming technical.
Want something slower? Try the sunset camel ride in the Agafay, or the Agafay combo with camel, quad and buggy. All options are on our Agafay desert tours page.
Highlights
- Your own automatic quad, with a helmet and a proper safety briefing before you set off
- Stony tracks, dry wadis and ridge-top viewpoints with the High Atlas as a backdrop
- Small groups led by a local guide who rides these trails almost every day
- Mint tea and a breather in a Berber camp once the engines are off
- Pick-up and drop-off at your hotel or riad in Marrakech, so no taxis to haggle over
- A sunset departure for softer light and cooler air
Itinerary
Pick-up in Marrakech
Our driver meets you at your hotel, or at the nearest square or gate if your riad sits in a lane that cars cannot reach. Morning rides usually leave between 8:30 and 9:00, afternoon rides around 14:00, and sunset rides are timed to the season, so earlier in winter and later in summer. The drive takes 45 to 60 minutes.
Safety briefing and kit (about 20 minutes)
At the quad base you are fitted with a helmet. Your guide covers throttle, brakes, how to lean on a slope and the trail hand signals, followed by a practice loop on flat ground.
The ride (1 or 2 hours)
You ride in single file behind the guide, keeping a safe gap. The one-hour route stays closer to the base and gives you a feel for the plateau and a couple of good viewpoints. The two-hour route pushes further out, with more climbs, longer open stretches and more time on the ridges facing the mountains. Regular stops let you regroup and drink water.
Mint tea at the Berber camp (about 30 minutes)
Engines off, you sit on cushions under a canvas tent and drink mint tea poured from a height, swapping stories about who took the hills too fast.
Return to Marrakech
The drive back takes another 45 to 60 minutes. Door to door, plan on around four hours for the one-hour ride and five for the two-hour or sunset ride.
Options and prices
There are three ways to do this trip, all priced per person. The 1-hour quad ride is a good taster for first-timers or anyone fitting it around a busy Marrakech schedule. The 2-hour quad ride covers far more ground and is the one we recommend if you have ridden before or simply want more time out there. The sunset quad ride (2 hours) follows a similar route but is timed so you finish as the light turns orange over the Atlas, which is also the most comfortable time of day in the warmer months. If two of you want to share one quad, mention it when booking and we will confirm the arrangement.

Good to know
- What to bring: closed shoes, long trousers, sunglasses, sunscreen and a scarf to wrap over your nose and mouth. Our guide to what to wear in Morocco has more tips.
- Fitness: no riding experience is needed, but you should be comfortable gripping handlebars and steering on uneven ground for an hour or two.
- Age limits: drivers should be at least 16; younger children can ride as passengers behind a parent. Tell us ages when you book.
- Safety: stay behind the guide, keep your distance and do not overtake. The ride is not recommended during pregnancy or with back or neck problems.
- Best season: October to May is ideal. In summer, midday heat is fierce, so choose a morning or sunset ride. Winter evenings get cold, so pack a warm layer. See our best time to visit Morocco guide.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a driving licence to ride a quad in Agafay?
No licence is needed. The quads are automatic and the guide teaches you everything during the briefing and practice loop.
Is it frightening if I have never ridden anything with an engine?
Most of our riders are first-timers. The guide keeps the pace steady, and you control your own speed with your thumb, so you can always ease off.
How dusty will I get?
Quite dusty, especially in dry months and towards the back of the line. Wear clothes you do not mind getting dirty and keep a scarf over your face.
Will I see sand dunes?
No. The Agafay is rocky and hilly rather than sandy. For real dunes, look at a quad excursion in the Merzouga dunes as part of a longer Sahara trip.
Can we add dinner or a camel ride on the same day?
Yes. Ask us when booking, or choose the combo tour, which already includes a camel ride and a buggy session. You can also contact our Marrakech team for a private version.
