This Agafay desert tour is for people who cannot decide, and do not see why they should. In a single afternoon from Marrakech you ride a camel, drive your own quad and share an off-road buggy, all on the same stony plateau with the High Atlas watching over you. Booking the three together costs less than booking them separately, saves you two extra trips out of the city, and gives everyone in the group a turn at the thing they were most excited about.

A word on expectations, since we would rather you arrive happy than surprised. The Agafay is a rocky desert of rolling, sun-baked hills and gravel plains, not a sea of sand. It is close, easy and very photogenic, but the big dunes are in the deep south. Our article on choosing between Merzouga and Agafay sets out the differences, and the 3-day desert tour from Marrakech is the shortest way to reach real Saharan dunes.

Tour overview

The combo runs as a well-paced afternoon rather than a rush. After pick-up and the drive out, you start with the motorised part while the group is fresh: a quad session with one machine per person, then a buggy session where two people share each buggy and can swap driving. Once the engines cool down, you climb onto the camels for a slow ride as the light softens. The half-day version ends with mint tea before the drive back; the full-afternoon version continues into a Moroccan dinner in a desert camp as the sun goes down.

Each activity is shorter than its stand-alone version, which is the point: you get a solid taste of all three without spending the whole day in the desert. If you already know which one you love, the individual trips go further, namely Agafay quad biking, the Agafay buggy tour and the sunset camel ride. Everything is gathered on our Agafay desert tours page.

Highlights

  • Three activities in one outing, with a single pick-up and one booking
  • Your own quad for the first session, then a two-seat buggy shared with a partner
  • A relaxed camel ride to finish, when the light is at its best
  • Mint tea in a Berber tent, or a sunset dinner on the longer option
  • Great for mixed groups where some want speed and others want calm
  • Marrakech hotel and riad transfers both ways

Itinerary

Early afternoon: leave Marrakech

We collect you from your hotel or the nearest accessible point to your riad, usually around 13:00 to 14:00 depending on the season. Allow 45 to 60 minutes to reach the activity base on the plateau.

Quad session (about 45 minutes)

After helmets and a safety briefing, each person takes an automatic quad out behind the guide on a loop of dirt tracks and gentle climbs. It is enough time to get comfortable, enjoy a few open stretches and stop at a viewpoint.

Buggy session (about 45 minutes)

Next, you pair up in two-seat buggies. The steering wheel and pedals make it a very different feeling from the quad, and the roll cage lets passengers relax. Swap drivers at the halfway stop so both of you get a go.

Camel ride (about 45 minutes)

The cameleer helps you mount, and the caravan walks out across the plateau at an unhurried pace. After the noise of the engines, the silence is the striking part.

Tea or sunset dinner, then return

On the half-day option, you finish with mint tea in the camp and are back in Marrakech in the early evening, around five to six hours after pick-up. On the full-afternoon option, you stay for sunset and a Moroccan dinner, returning to the city after dark.

Options and prices

Both options are priced per person, and buggies are shared by two. The Half day: camel + quad + buggy covers all three activities followed by mint tea, and suits travellers with dinner plans back in the medina. The Full afternoon with sunset dinner adds a relaxed meal in a desert camp as the sky darkens, so you do not have to think about where to eat that night.

Good to know

  • Fitness: nothing demanding, but the quad and buggy are bumpy, so the tour is not suitable during pregnancy or with back problems.
  • Ages: children can join the camel ride and travel as passengers on quads and buggies; quad drivers should be 16 or older and buggy drivers adult car drivers. Tell us ages when booking.
  • Safety: follow the guides on every activity and keep distance between vehicles.
  • Best season: October to May is ideal. In midsummer the afternoon heat is intense, so we may shift timings later. Check our best time to visit Morocco guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is the combo better value than booking each activity separately?

Yes. You pay one bundled price and one set of transfers, and each activity is a little shorter than its stand-alone version.

Who do I share the buggy with?

Usually your travel partner or a member of your group. Solo travellers can ask about a private buggy for a supplement.

Can someone in our group skip the motorised activities?

Yes. They can relax at the camp with tea while the others ride, then join everyone for the camel ride. Tell us when booking.

Can we do the combo as a private tour?

Certainly. Our private tours can include this programme, or contact us for a quote.
